Palawan, The Philippines

The CERS Palawan centre is located at the estuaries of Maoyon River and the Sulu Sea, the region is surrounded by multiple cultural sites and diverse habitat, which provide a platform for research and education for students and researchers.

The site is located near the estuaries and offers a diverse ecosystem including mangroves, primary jungle, freshwater and the ocean, and a World Heritage Natural Site, The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which showcases a spectacular underground river and karst landscape.

The site is also located near the Batak tribe, which was once exclusively hunter-gatherer and now is facing a challenge of fading culture under civilization. CERS has conducted multiple projects to document their ancient techniques and help them develop a sustainable livelihood.

WHMCE organizes exploration trips for HKU students to the Palawan site and provides opportunities for students to gain multidisciplinary knowledge including ecology, geology and anthropology.
