The CERS Hainan Hongshui site was established since 2007, when CERS proposed to preserve the last-remaining traditional village of the indigenous Li people of Hainan before the government was planning to replace the thatch-roofed houses with cement and brick houses.
The preserved thatch-roofed houses now serve as exhibition space to showcase the lifestyle of the Li tribe, and accommodations for students and scholars during research and educational programs.
